The letter the young man holds in his hand is inscribed (partly illegibly): Caris. figlio/ Per adenire... Sodisfacioni in/ordine alle Vole Ritratto che/fov... faro da Pietro Nelli Pittore/in... Città di Roma/Fecit 7 Mag 1715.
Pietro Nelli was a Roman history painter and portraitist. He was a student of Giovanni Maria Morandi and in 1712 was admitted to the Congregazione dei Virtuosi al Pantheon. In 1719 he became a member of the Accademia di San Luca. Nelli was successful as a portraitist and painted, among others, the likeness of Pope Clement XI.
